Welcome

Commemoration:

Hi Everyone,

Today (2-1-2016) we observe the twenty-year anniversary of David Mac’s death.  I just wanted to take the occasion to thank everyone who’s passed through the Fargo Planet site, dropped a note or a comment, or passed the link on to another interested Mac fan.  It is also an opportunity to remember that the opposite of death isn’t necessarily just life, it’s birth.  So bring something into existence today if you can.

I keep meaning to digitize and add more materials to Fargo Planet, but hopefully there’s enough here to keep your head bobbing and your kangol kitchen throbbing for now.   Thanks, everyone.

Peace,

DJ K

And now, on with our regularly scheduled programming.

Fargo Planet is the online repository for all things David Mac.  Whether as the MC in the underground rap duo F-Kripz, as the editor of the zine Envy the Dead, or as the beloved friend, colleague, and debate partner remembered by many, Mac impacted untold lives before taking his own on February 1, 1996.  Here on Fargo Planet, we remember him by way of traces — tattered xeroxed zines, hissy cassette mixes, the prodigious contents of his cherished “rhyme folder” — deposited for your perusal and listening pleasure.  We hope that you will be thrilled and provoked by these fossils of his radically creative life.

Use the “categories” drop-down menu below to explore ample zineage, Mac’s rhyme folder, the music of the F-Kripz, media clippings, and other relics.

What an incredible resource you’ve created here. David sent me a couple of tapes in the early 90s for a zine I did. His music (Spit and Concentration Camp Muzak) was the best thing I got, out of all my solicitings. Nice job keeping his work alive.

  2. I had a couple people contacted me over the last year when they found this site and asked me if I knew the details. I has only made a fast look at the site initially and told them I was not sure what the deal was or the forces at play. I made time today and was able to dig into this stack of tasty. Thank you for realizing the aspiration of distributing your beats with digital quality for everyone to enjoy.

Let me take a moment to say that almost all of the musical gems on this site are not solo works, but instead are the results of the collaboration and hard work of the legendary power duo of the supreme skinny boy rhyme stylist known around the world as MC David Mac and the genius beats, samples, eleven nine crossfader mastery, and music of DJK. The tracks are born from a true meeting of two committed musical geniuses.

I believe I can safely speak for Dallas and myself when I say we are eager for the addition of Six Crates and an Ice Cold Chiller to this online repository.

  3. Slickery Eel! What a lovely note–sorry I didn’t see it sooner. Today is the 18 year anniversary of Dave Mac’s death. I’m sending out the link to this page to many friends today. So glad you had time to dig in and enjoy. DJK did a kick ass job putting it together! Hope you are well, old friend.

Kim and others, thanks for this link that helps me remember David, whom I know as a youngster, and then followed his amazing debate career. I remember him so fondly.

❤ it. Thank you so much for getting this up. the snail mail zine trade is how i discovered all this wonderful music in the early 90's. Starting around 1997 i would occasionally search for F-Kripz and find nothing, as if it were all a dream. Several yrs ago his suicide was revealed to me, and i understood more than one thing, in more than one way. This morning though i woke thinking of this DIY goodness and by golly! thank you! -Emcee / Zero Points Bulletin /

My new ride (’05 CRV!) has a tape deck, so I hauled out my boxes of cassettes and dug out my F-Kripz collection. I derive immense pleasure–and emotion– from rolling around South Minneapolis running errands with these tapes pumping. The pain of returning home….. nostos+algos, yo.

Thank you K, for not letting this art fall into utter obscurity when regular obscurity would do .

Found out about David Mac’s story very recently. I have been doing my research, seemed like a wonderful person with great talent. Rest in peace, nearly 30 years later.
